There is some overlap between the services but the main difference is a stylist concentrates on everything aesthetically related, a planner is more of a project manager who oversee’s and suggests all elements involved in the event and who’s responsibility is to accomplish the project to a set budget.
Get a budget in mind, know how much you are prepared to spend from the get go and trust your planner to help you spend that money, maximising it to the fullest.
I am incredibly lucky to love what I do but for me there really is no better moment then when the client first walks in and finally see’s what we have been working on all year and you see the smile and the relief over their face.

Be flexible in your ideas and style, what you like your client may not and most importantly check you have done everything over and over until you are a million per cent certain that every single element of the job has been confirmed and completed.
We were working on a wedding in Liverpool taking place in a marquee at the brides parents home. It was August so most places you think good weather… not on this weekend!! There was a massive storm and the gales were crazy, the guests were all due to arrive within the hour and everything was pretty much ready. We were just finishing off when there was a huge roar followed by a crash, a giant oak tree had fallen down across the driveway blocking the entrance to the marquee and landing on the brides father car. That was pretty stressful as not something you have to deal with every day but you just have to keep calm and handle it. We called the council who luckily lifted the tree out of the way so guests could enter just in time for the ceremony and then during the party whilst the music played chopped it up and removed it! Sadly we couldn’t save the car!
Be personable & confident in your client management skills. You work with each client for a year, sometimes longer whilst planning their event and they will go through all sorts of trials and tribulations during that period. Sometimes you’re their planner other times their friend, they will still change their minds, have doubts, question how much they are spending. Your job is to put their mind at ease and by the end of the conversation take away any stresses they have.
Nerves of steel, when crisis strikes and inevitably at some point it will, it’s crucial to hold your nerve and handle the issue quickly without causing concern to your client
Meticulous organisational skills
I worked for 10 years in sponsorship, production and fundraising but I was always working alongside event stylists and planners. I knew that was where I wanted to progress but the experience I gained from those roles was instrumental in my development and knowledge of the industry.
When I was 18 I started as an intern at a PR agency called Freud Communications in London. The first event I worked on was a UK promotional Tour for KFC launching the first of its chicken burgers! Twenty years ago, until that point they were just a southern fried chicken kind of place!!
